Tales Of The City - Armistead Maupin

This was a series of books I stumbled across when I was still relatively young. At a time in my own life when I was coming to terms with being  gay and all the troubles and turmoil that go along side that, one fateful night I discovered this amazing programme on Channel 4.
A TV programme that not only had some rather attractive men to ogle, but the first time I can remember ever seeing a gay character being portrayed in an even vaguely normal fashion. Well, for me that was enough to get me intrigued.
From that moment on I was hooked on an incredible series of books. The portrayals of the characters was unbelievable, such a varied mix of lifestyles and a view of how differing norms can interconnect.
Originally written as a serial for newspapers in America, its popularity grew and subsequently they were combined into books. The fact that it had started a serial in a newspaper allowed current events of the time to be built into the stories making them very much more real.
Maupin’s books show how so many lives interconnect, and progress over many generations, how friendships and relationships develop, how the closest friendships can fade, and how opposites can draw you closer to someone than you thought possible.
The books really called to me, and have over the years to the point where they are probably my most read collection of books. I have recommended these to a lot of people of the years, and everyone has found a character that they can relate to.
I have always been inspired by these books… and hope that if you get a chance to pick one up… you too will be inspired!
